For warm Gulf water with fewer crowds, visit 30A in May or from mid-September through October. Summer (June to August) has the warmest water, in the mid-80s °F, and the biggest crowds. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks around September 10. Winter is mild and quiet, with average highs in the 60s and Gulf water near 60 °F.

When is the best time to go to 30A?

It depends on whether you're coming to swim, to explore or to save money.

• Best overall: May and mid-September through October. The water is warm and the summer crowds are gone. Visit South Walton says things slow down once school is back in September, and it suggests October if you want spring-like weather and still want to swim.
• Warmest water and busiest: June through August. Walton County says summer brings nearly half of its yearly visitors and is the main season for family vacations.
• Quietest and cheapest: November through February. Visit South Walton says lodging often costs less and the mood is laid-back, but the Gulf is chilly for most swimmers.

30A weather and water temperature by month

This table uses NOAA's 1991-2020 climate normals for Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, the nearest official climate station, about 20 miles west of central 30A. Water temperatures are our averages of NOAA readings from 2021 to 2025 at the Panama City Beach pier station, a few miles east of Inlet Beach.

Rain days have at least 0.01 inch of rain. October and May are the driest months. August is the wettest, and it averages about 17 days at 90 °F or hotter.

What is hurricane season like on 30A?

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. The National Hurricane Center says the Atlantic season peaks on September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. An average season brings 14 named storms and 7 hurricanes across the whole Atlantic basin, which includes the Gulf.

Storms can still arrive late in the season. Hurricane Isaias affected Walton County in October 2026, and the county posted recovery updates for beach accesses and businesses. If you book from August through October, read your rental's cancellation and hurricane policy before you pay.

Spring break and the shoulder seasons

March is spring break. Visit South Walton says the beach starts buzzing even though the water is still cool, around 67 °F on average. In 2022, the Walton County Sheriff's Office told WJHG that its spring break crowd skews toward high-school-age kids traveling with families rather than college groups. April and May have highs in the mid-70s to mid-80s and less rain, and the Gulf averages 78 °F in May.

Fall is the other shoulder season. The Gulf stays in the 80s through September, rain drops off in October, and Visit South Walton calls October's sunsets some of the best of the year. Walton County encourages summer visitors to come back in the shoulder seasons to avoid crowds, and many of 30A's big festivals fall in these months. See 30A events by month.

Winter on 30A

Winter is mild, not tropical. January averages a high of 63 °F and a low of 45 °F. Freezing nights are rare, about six in a typical year. Visit South Walton notes that November and December are growing more popular for holiday trips. It's a good season for biking, state park walks and quiet town centers.
