30A bike trails and bike rentals
Updated October 19, 2026
The main bike route on 30A is the Timpoochee Trail, a paved, mostly flat 19-mile multi-use path beside Scenic Highway 30A from Dune Allen to Inlet Beach. For unpaved riding, Point Washington State Forest's Eastern Lake Trail has 3.5-, 6- and 11-mile loops off County Road 395. Florida law requires helmets for riders under 16 and lights after dark. Many 30A rental shops deliver bikes to your rental and pick them up.
What is the Timpoochee Trail?
The Timpoochee Trail is the paved multi-use path that runs beside Scenic Highway 30A. Visit South Walton lists it as 19 miles long, easy, flat and paved, wheelchair accessible, and open to leashed pets. It runs from Dune Allen in the west, where 30A splits from U.S. 98, to Inlet Beach in the east. Along the way it passes through 12 of South Walton's 16 beach neighborhoods, state parks, the state forest and 15 coastal dune lakes.
What to expect on the ride:
- It switches sides. The trail crosses 30A several times, including at the Dune Allen and Ed Walline regional beach accesses. Stop and look before each crossing.
- Watch the Western Lake bridges. Visit South Walton notes that on the two bridges over Western Lake, near WaterColor, the trail briefly joins 30A itself.
- Plan stops at regional accesses. Dune Allen and Ed Walline have restrooms and water along the way.
Where can I ride off-pavement near 30A?
Point Washington State Forest covers about 15,400 acres of southern Walton County. The Florida Forest Service says its Eastern Lake Trail System has three double-track loops of 3.5, 6 and 11 miles for hikers and cyclists, starting from a trailhead on County Road 395. Visit South Walton rates the yellow loop easy to moderate and the orange loop moderate to difficult. It also lists the Longleaf Greenway Trail (segments of 2.5 to 3.25 miles) and the half-mile 30A Trail off 30A, which connects to the Eastern Lake Trail. Expect sand, and wider tires help. As of October 2026, a state forest day pass is $2, and day use runs sunrise to sunset.
State parks:
- Grayton Beach State Park has a 4.5-mile hiking and biking trail through the forest and around the back waters of Western Lake.
- Topsail Hill Preserve State Park has more than 10 miles of trails. Visit South Walton lists the 3.2-mile Campbell Lake Bike Path as easy and the paved Beach Tram Path as uphill on the way back from the beach.
Storm closures, as of October 18, 2026: after Hurricane Isaias, recreation areas in Point Washington State Forest are closed, Topsail Hill is closed, and Grayton Beach State Park is open for day use only. Check the official pages linked below before you ride.
What are the bike rules on 30A?
As of October 2026, Florida's bicycle law (s. 316.2065) says:
- Helmets: required for riders and passengers under 16, including kids in trailers.
- Small children: a child under 4, or 40 pounds or less, must ride in a seat or carrier made for that size.
- Lights: from sunset to sunrise, you need a white front light visible from 500 feet, plus a red rear light and a red reflector visible from 600 feet.
- Pedestrians: on sidewalks and crosswalks, yield to people walking and give an audible signal before you pass.
Visit South Walton's trail etiquette adds: keep right and pass on the left, pedestrians have the right of way, keep dogs on a short leash, and don't wear headphones while riding.
How do bike rentals work on 30A?
Most visitors rent rather than bring bikes. Visit South Walton notes that you can rent by the day, but if you're staying along 30A, a weeklong rental often makes more sense. Rental listings on Visit South Walton show shops that deliver to homes along the whole 30A corridor and pick the bikes up when you leave. What to ask when you book:
- Delivery window and how pickup works on checkout day.
- Helmets: Florida law bars renting a bike to a child under 16 unless the child has a helmet or the shop provides one.
- Locks and lights, especially if you'll ride to dinner and back after dark.
- Kids' gear: child seats, trailers or kids' bikes, sized correctly.
