30A beach flag colors, explained
Updated October 18, 2026
On 30A and all of South Walton, green means low hazard, yellow means moderate surf or currents, red means high hazard, double red means the Gulf is closed to the public, and purple means stinging marine life. Entering the water under double red flags violates Walton County Code Sec. 22-54(h)(3) and carries a $500 fine; South Walton Fire District sets the flags for all 26 miles of beach.
What do the beach flag colors mean on 30A?
South Walton uses Florida's statewide beach warning flag system, adopted into law in 2005. Here is what each flag means, in the words South Walton Fire District (SWFD) uses:
- Green: Low hazard. Calm conditions, exercise caution.
- Yellow: Medium hazard. Moderate surf and/or moderate currents.
- Red: High hazard. High surf and/or strong currents.
- Double red: Water closed to the public.
- Purple: Marine pests present. Visit South Walton lists Man O' War, jellyfish and stingrays. Purple can fly alongside another color, so "yellow/purple" means moderate surf plus stinging marine life.
Flags are general warnings about surf conditions. SWFD notes they do not specifically mark where rip currents are, and the absence of a flag does not mean the water is safe.
Is it illegal to swim during double red flags in Walton County?
Yes. Walton County's Waterways and Beach Activities Ordinance (Chapter 22, as amended by Ordinance 2025-22) lets SWFD, the Sheriff's Office and the county close the Gulf when conditions endanger the public, and Sec. 22-54(h)(3) makes it unlawful to violate that closure once it has been posted. As of October 2026, the county's fine schedule (Resolution 2025-86) sets the fine for a double red flag violation at $500 for every violation, plus a $25 clerk fee for an uncontested citation. Visit South Walton and SWFD also warn that violators can face criminal charges.
The ordinance has one narrow exception: people surfing with a surfboard, as the code defines it, are exempt unless a mandatory evacuation order covers the adjacent beach. Boogie boards and floats are not surfboards under the code.
How does South Walton Fire District decide and post the flags?
SWFD's Beach Safety Division evaluates conditions on all 26 miles of Walton County beaches twice a day. The flag color is set by the most dangerous surf or rip conditions anywhere in the county, and that same color flies at every beach access. That means the water in front of you may look calmer than the flag suggests. Trust the flag, not the view.
Where to check:
- Flag poles at Regional Beach Accesses and many neighborhood accesses.
- SWFD's surf conditions page, updated with a timestamp.
- Text SAFETY to 31279 for Visit South Walton's Gulf condition and flag alerts.
Lifeguards from SWFD staff the Regional Beach Accesses (Miramar Beach, Dune Allen, Fort Panic, Ed Walline, Gulfview Heights, Blue Mountain, Santa Clara and Inlet Beach) from March 1 to October 31, with limited roving coverage the rest of the year. The state parks along 30A have no lifeguards.
How do you spot and escape a rip current?
Rip currents often form on calm, sunny days, according to the National Weather Service, so a nice day is not proof of safe water. Visit South Walton lists these signs:
- Darker water, which signals a deeper channel
- Murky brown water from sand stirred off the bottom
- Smaller, choppy waves next to evenly breaking waves over a sandbar
- Waves breaking farther out on both sides of a calmer-looking gap
If you are caught: don't panic or swim against it. Float with the current until it weakens, then swim parallel to shore and back in. If someone else is in trouble, alert a lifeguard, have someone call 911 with clear landmarks, throw a flotation device, and do not go in after them.

What does a purple flag mean at the beach on 30A?
Purple means marine pests, such as jellyfish, Man O' War or stingrays, are present. It often flies with another color that describes the surf. SWFD advises warm water, not ice, for sting pain.
How much is the fine for swimming under double red flags in Walton County?
As of October 2026 it is $500 per violation under Resolution 2025-86, plus clerk fees. Visit South Walton and SWFD note criminal charges are also possible.
Can I wade in up to my knees during double red flags?
No. Double red means the water is closed to the public, and the county ordinance applies to anyone who enters the Gulf, not just swimmers in deep water. Enjoy the beach from the sand until the flags come down.
Why is the flag red when my beach looks calm?
SWFD flies the color that matches the most dangerous conditions anywhere along the county's 26 miles, so the same flag flies everywhere. Rip currents can also be strong without big waves.
Are there lifeguards on 30A in October and winter?
Lifeguards cover the Regional Beach Accesses March 1 to October 31. Outside that season coverage is limited and roving, so check the flag and swim with extra caution.
